What this is based on

  1. The formula. Unit charge = R + V + (Ot/Os) B + (St/Ss) S, where R is reception and conveyance, V primary treatment, B biological treatment and S sludge treatment and disposal, Ot and St your effluent's COD and suspended solids and Os and Ss the standard strengths. 2. Severn Trent. 2026/27 standard tariff: R £0.4210, V £0.4207, B £0.2533 and S £0.2395 per m3, at standard strengths of 351 mg/l COD and 343 mg/l suspended solids. Severn Trent non-household wholesale scheme of charges 2026/27
  3. Hafren Dyfrdwy. 2026/27: R £0.5643, V £0.7503, B £0.4471 and S £0.3032 per m3, at 351 mg/l COD and 343 mg/l suspended solids. Hafren Dyfrdwy NHH wholesale charges scheme 2026/27
  4. Yorkshire Water. 2026/27, under 50,000 m3 a year: R 84.43p, V 83.49p, B 75.71p and S 50.02p per m3, at 840 mg/l COD and 335 mg/l suspended solids. Yorkshire Water wholesale charges scheme 2026/27
  5. Wessex Water. 2026/27, up to 80 Ml of total waste discharge: R £1.1777, V £0.4808, B £0.6909 and S £0.3593 per m3, at a deemed standard strength of 802 mg/l COD and 313 mg/l suspended solids. Wessex Water wholesale charges scheme 2026/27
  6. What is left out. Annual band, fixed, sampling and minimum charges, and any part of the treatment your effluent does not receive, are not included. Your retailer's bill is the figure you pay.

This calculator applies water companies' published 2026/27 Mogden figures to what you enter; it is not legal or engineering advice, and your retailer's bill is the figure you pay. An enquiry sent through the form is read and answered by Joe, who runs this site; no firm receives it.

Questions, answered directly

How are trade effluent charges calculated?

On the Mogden formula: a charge per cubic metre of R + V + (Ot/Os) B + (St/Ss) S, where your effluent's COD and suspended solids scale the treatment and sludge parts against standard sewage.(Yorkshire Water wholesale charges scheme 2026/27)

What is a standard strength?

The COD and suspended solids your water company treats as ordinary sewage. They differ by company: 351 mg/l COD at Severn Trent, 840 mg/l at Yorkshire Water and 802 mg/l at Wessex Water.(Severn Trent non-household wholesale scheme of charges 2026/27)

Do I need consent to discharge trade effluent?

In England and Wales a discharge of trade effluent into a public sewer needs the sewerage undertaker's consent under Chapter III of Part IV of the Water Industry Act 1991.(Water Industry Act 1991 Part IV Chapter III)

Is this my exact bill?

No. It applies the published 2026/27 Mogden figures to your volume and strength and leaves out fixed, band, sampling and minimum charges. Your retailer's bill is what you pay.

The question this page is here to answer

What are this year's Mogden parameters (Ro, Vo, Bo, So, Os, Ss) per sewerage undertaker and NAV, and what does a given volume and strength cost in each area?

Your water company, volume and sample results. The figures come from each company's own 2026/27 charges scheme.
